Late autumn of 1944, the Laplandarmy withdrew to safe positions in North-Finland, as a part of Operation Birke (Birch). Many of the troops came from the Karelianfront, walking back from the Kiestinki-area (today Kestn'ga - Russia). But still they had to walk even futher, to the harbour of Narvik, Norway, and some troops even as far as Mo i Rana, to travel with train, back to the Reich, taking part of fighting the Allies, in Operation Northwind.
